something is going to happen yeah learning another language is not a Sprint in fact it's not a marathon I was about to say primero L Amour say gundo la tecnica anything can happen this is Thailand and time and again Thailand has demonstrated that anything can happen I have another favorite word this word makes me excited starts with an n okay s e what do you think it has an e in it this is candidi featuring my name is Vic and welcome to vision and today we're talking to people for having me oh you're welcome is great pleasure that you stopped by today oh it's my pleasure the pleasure is all mine okay so actually we're neighbors right exactly because you're working over at the standard or the global Focus program yes yeah um so it's a once a week program since you give me um this opportunity please allow me to promote my program sure of course go ahead proper focus is a weekly program and me and my team will pick international news that we think would be interest for the audience and present it to you once a week I'm a big fan also thank you you used to like once you did the interview in English to talking to the first French woman Astronaut Astronaut exactly exactly I love that yeah me too yeah she was so inspiring so many ways so do you still get to do the English interview often not anymore not as much as I would like and not as much as before yeah actually your your your problem is kind of like similar to most people's problem in Thailand because we have been taking all these courses and classes in English since we are what like 7 right and we don't get to use English almost never then you have to create opportunities for yourself to speak in the front of the camera or sometimes I'll just um pick out an articles an article and they just read it out aloud so that I won't forget yeah just like any skills on Earth if you want to maintain it and keep it up you have to practice yeah so that's what I'm doing every day as well unfortunate in the sense that in my line of job I get to practice English 1 way or another so I think that's how I key polishing my English well it's funny you mentioned like talking in front of camera because 30 years ago it would be so hard like impossible for you to talk in front of a camera but right now everybody has camera in their own hands so you can just talk to camera whenever you can put content on Tik Tok you can put content on YouTube done right I used to talk in front of the mirror actually oh really to look at myself not so much on the camera yeah but I think camera can help because you can replay and look at yourself how you look or how you sound when you speak in Thai English or whatever language is you want whatever you do when you're uh still anchoring at the nation and on TV uh in the beginning in the beginning yeah I'll just practice by myself at home um speaking out loud so that I would calm my my nerve down somehow because I get excited too you mentioned before we started taping that you were nervous and I couldn't believe it because you've done this for you have been doing this for over 20 years exactly yeah you still get nervous but I've never talked to you okay so I'm excited to be meeting you so that's a good excitement yeah that's a good kind of excitement yes I look forward to getting to talk to you oh me too same here so I'm also excited about the show today so um let's go back to 20 years ago when you first started um before you got this job as a news anchor what did you do then before that before that um before that I spent a short time at Boi Thailand's Board of Investments okay and then before that I just graduated from University so it's a it was a very short time at Boi and then I went to um Nation TV so I it was 1 of your first jobs you started out in in the business exactly how did you train yourself or how did you uh practice to be on camera besides talking in front of a mirror of course uh I look at how other people do it like or all the other more experience um journalists do it and then keep on doing it I guess practice makes perfect so the more you do it then you're more the more you get the view of it and I guess that's how I would start to feel more comfortable about saying things or reporting in front of the camera did you have any Idol that you look up to and try to probably learn from like the Styles the um uh the way they like report news um not so much of the style but I think I learned a lot from um especially how he would focus on the content of we want to say and not so much about how we look exactly that's amazing and he's been like developing he's been uh changing he's been um like going with the trends that's amazing on his part exactly so working with him I learned a lot especially how he she just doesn't stop yeah he keeps on running so in order to keep up with him at least I have to jog right or else he will be so far ahead that I can't catch up with him so he has been a role model in many ways as a journalist as a person who is very diligent and hardworking and he's always curious about the world around him mhm so you were like fresh out of college so to speak more or less yeah more or less and when was the first time that you got the feelings that I got it I have already discovered who I am on camera and I have my style and I'm confident now oh it took up quite a long while yeah yeah yes or months at at least half a year I think oh okay yeah before before I can control myself to the point that my heart it would be it faster whenever you know the cameraman say 54321 and then camera right yeah my heart would beat faster but then the time that I can calm it down be shorter and shorter ah you control yourself better yeah a little bit by bit by bit I think right okay and how about when you first know that kind of develop your own style that people can tell the difference between without and other people oh that that I really I think I have to ask the audience for that yeah because I'm just being myself I guess I don't I don't plan on how I will be on camera I I don't plan on that at all I'm just being myself like that talking to you okay and I think it is um it's just natural so there's no intentional design know in advance of how you want to look or no not at all this I see yeah this is me this is the way I am yeah and people love that oh thank you yeah me too oh thank you thank you I think everyone is unique like I look at you you're yourself the way you talk the way you react and I think we all can sense that that's the sincerity right that we talk to them on camera yeah but anyway you came before me like 15 years at least so I I'm sure I'm going to learn a lot from you today so I I was curious what you think about how easy it seems for a lot of people to just be on camera and act as a reporter or you know really report uh from these things sometimes or to like analyze whatever is going on in the world it was pretty easy today like um you know the opportunity that they can learn and uh speaking English uh opportunity to practice themselves in front of a camera and Technology helps a lot too it's pretty easy and how how how do you think about that um I think it's easier in the sense that technology helps with the flow of information right it's very easy to find information um from Google from the internet but at the same time because of this overflow of information I think you have to really be able to distinguish what is what is fake news what is real news what is facts and what is opinion I think that's the line that you must be able to draw with all the information that you see yeah so you don't see it as a problem or a threat for someone who came before like a lot of photographers out there talking about how you know like technology these days or you know the the quality of the camera on on the phone can can enable a lot of people to be almost as good or even better than a professional photographer so you don't have any problem with that in terms of like people acting as a news reporter mm no not at all not at all all are welcome is an open field yeah I think it's totally up to you to the audience to decide who they want to listen to maybe it's because of the style of the personality of the content of whatever factors yeah um accessibility like Tik Tok probably is easier to watch news on Tik Tok than on TV maybe people are still watching that maybe for some people so it's totally fine I think platforms are not important at all as long as you can have access to all of those information to listen to the people that you like I think that's fine okay so talking about platforms um where can we find you these days besides on global forecast at the standard oh here Monday to Friday okay so how how you say it working out over there are are you healthy and and oh yeah it's fun yeah it is fun I had great time working there because I get to learn a lot of new things about the media landscape as well um we are talking about the audience who is a the mass audience yeah so the type of news to be presented to coincide with their interest is something that we have to decide on as well that is something challenging and I think different people enjoy different types of meals so there's a market segmentation here yeah yeah so for channel 131 we have 1 type of audience for the standard we have another type of audience so I think we have to pick and choose what News 2 presents to which audience so TV a lot different from what it used to be 10 years ago um I think people in television need to migrate towards online platform as well uh but in terms of Television itself I think there is a segmentation as well the type of news that you want to watch then each channel would somehow overlap and they would have their own niche market as well so it totally depends on the audience which channel you want to look at okay so your focus being the foreign and international news was it uh we need to start out at first as an assignment or your pure interest how is my pure interest yeah yeah international news it has always been that way why because it's fun because it's exciting because something somewhere something is going to happen yeah and you're talking about the world so it's a very big stage here of course anything happening in Thailand is interesting as well but we should keep up with international news as well in order to learn about the trends to learn about people to learn about places culture and ideas we need to know what's going on around the world mhm so does English ability helped a lot oh definitely definitely any language I think is crucial in helping us understand the culture of that language and of course knowing another language is like opening up a whole new world to you if you know English whole world opens up to you you know Chinese you know Russian French Spanish A Whole New World will open up to you as well yeah all the culture is not just what's going on exactly in terms of news but how people live over there and how how people think around the world but um compared to like internal news like Thai news a lot of people might say that international news or foreign news is pretty distant and maybe they they cannot find the the connection between themselves and what's going on around the world like why should I pay like any attention to what's going on in Africa right now how does it affect me like personally so what do you think okay um then maybe you can get a glimpse of what's going on around the world and pick on the news that might interest you or might benefit you for instance okay news about AI artificial intelligence that's the trend maybe you would want to know how AI will replace some jobs in the future that somehow might affect you of course you have to be prepared for it so I think you need to pick on what news you want to follow but for me um watching international news sometimes it's just like watching series as well ah for example um Joe Biden and Donald Trump there might be a rematch in the election next year yeah for me this is like season 2 of grandpas trying to win the election again so for me it's it's fun it and it's not that far away America sounds far away but in the end if there's a change in precedence or in the political party then their policies might affect Thailand as well we live in a global village 1 way or another whatever is happening in other parts of the world might affect us here in Thailand well um people learn English from news almost all the time so do you have any like uh tricks and tips of how to uh learn more English from following news is especially international news oh yeah even even I today I need to Google I need to open up the dictionary if if I see a word that I don't understand but in order to learn something don't skip it you got to find out what it means and try to memorize it okay do you have any uh technique of memorizing words or phrases not at all you just have to repeat repeat repeat mhm and practice practice practice spend time with it basically spend time with it um I think to use a language is to be familiar with it and to be familiar with it is you have to keep on using it there's no shortcut okay if there's a shortcut tell me I want to know too oh me too I want to know too yeah it well it took us I think like over 20 years for us to get to this point uh the point being having being able to have a conversation in English but that's something else too A lot of people say you should uh you you should not just learn English by just talking or listening you you have to um read to you have to write to do you agree with that that we have to like take like 4 skills altogether and definitely yeah definitely All 4 skills are essential um speaking listening writing and reading I think those are very crucial as well because um I think it's they're they're all comprehensive in order for you to further your language capabilities right so um let's go back a little bit a little bit to um the news especially international news so um besides some of the news uh in Thailand produced by Thai people there's a lot of international news agency out there we hear about CNN other times CNBC what have you so do you have any favorite news agent agency that you like um not exactly but I sort of scan all of them okay yeah to see you know sometimes um the same story might be written a little bit differently in terms of the details so if I want to details and this article from this agency doesn't provide it then I'll look elsewhere yeah so there's no actual favorite um that I have because I have to look at them all yeah but what you talked about like CNN BBC these are the English-speaking world okay what I really wish is I know other languages so that I can enter into other worlds as well yeah okay because actually it's not just about the way they write news but their opinion or attitude or maybe their stance like what uh they stand for or uh what they believe in so like editorials not just the writing style so uh can can you talk more about what agencies have like different kind of personalities of where they are if a CNN then it's from a US perspective if it's BBC It's a UK perspective if it's France 24 Deutsche welle then emo Euro point of view then if you want something more in Southeast Asia in asean then it would be for me street times Singapore or channel news Asia or the star Malaysia or if sometimes I want to dig deeper into that story of a particular country then if I want to know something about the Philippines I would go to rappler or Malaysia Malaysia Keeney you know being more spec specific about the media in that country yeah so it totally depends on on what news we are talking about if it's Middle East then it's a that's how they will always um have their headlines first Middle Eastern stories first and then their perspective yeah so that's like geographically exactly what about personality as in terms of like the way they talk or the worst they use their attitude or the color the colorfulness in their language and uh easy or hard to understand like level of English because I'm asking for those uh beginners who want to start like following news uh to to improve that English I think they're all of international standard but of course if you want to talk about then CNN has the American accent and then BBC has the British accent right so it's a little bit different um I think I would advise what is best to do is for you or anybody I mean for the audience to listen to all of them to read all of them and decide for yourself which 1 suits you best ah okay it's just a feelings that okay I think uh when I listen or watch the news from this agency I I think I I have the most fun it could be that reason too right to follow yeah anybody at all that you like exactly anything that you like as long as it makes you keep on reading listening being interested makes you want to come back fine enough yes Okay so advice would be to try to consume different source of news yes okay so we can just like cross-check the facts probably exposed yourself to different kinds of accent out there exactly good but a lot of people might say to consume too much news can affect your negatively too it could be toxic it could be affected your it could be affected uh in terms of your like emotions what what is your take on that mm how much is too much how much is too much again that's very personal right I think you need to find your own equilibrium I guess of where the line should be that's that's a good word if you fancy equilibrium right yeah equilibrium okay um because like me I am in the news industry so I tend to have to follow up yeah almost all the time but sometimes it gets tiring too yeah so I'll take a break okay and then I'll come back to it have you ever been like depressed by following news too much no no okay so you know your line I I sound mentally strong right but actually yeah but but I think because I know when to stop mhm yeah I know when to stop like okay this is this is too much already yeah yeah my my mind is going crazy now so okay I'll stop how do other things and then maybe I'll come back to it but maybe it's something that the public um is super interested in right now and we have kind of have to follow like um the thing I remember like to stand out the most is the m um news like 5 years back everybody is like paying attention to what the story would end so it's kind of hard to stop yourself from following news right then just follow okay then just follow I asked you follow the news what should you tell yourself how should you take care of yourself like your mental state I think it totally depends on the story like the mopa story we all hope that we will find them alive right that's the word to use right we really want to find them alive without any losses at all so I think it's it's um it's not it doesn't harm your mental health that much in my opinion in my but you might lose sleep a lot of people have lost sleep over that yes yeah but I think that's okay okay we all show our Goodwill you know of giving moral support report to all the people who went into the cave to help you know that um they would find everyone alive and then everyone would be alive out of the cave as well I think that is that is fine in my opinion in my opinion okay but like politics right now yeah everyone is catching up about it every single second as well right right um this maybe I think sometimes we might need to take a break maybe it might be too overwhelming maybe too much yeah politics maybe step back a little bit don't get too involved too much into it I think it can it can somehow ruin your your your mental health yeah maybe it's not that urgent for you to follow like 24/7 yeah yeah learned to take a break exactly yeah so speaking of politics right now I think uh 1 thing that you the national news order uh would cover all the time is politics okay so um politics in Thailand right now what do you think in terms of what's going on and the news exciting and we are in um we are in a very uncertain time I think because nothing is definite in my opinion anything can happen this is Thailand and time and again um Thailand has demonstrated that Anything Can Happen yeah yeah okay so 1 thing that I think we can learn a lot from is from uh because he speaks English for 1 thing and the other thing is that he started communicating with the world this is something that we are not used to at least for the past 10 years or so um I think the way ITA speak as 1 of the potential leader is very um interesting and is something that we can learn from and also uh we we we have learned from a lot of like um world leaders out there so Barack Obama right and uh to Senda uh from um New Zealand New Zealand and did you have any favorite world leaders that you like and and for what reasons oh there are quite a number of them actually I would say Barack Obama President Barack Obama um prime minister Jacinda Arden the former prime minister of New Zealand and then of course the legendary late prime minister of Singapore Lee Kuan Yew ah yes all of them are excellent speakers is just that they have different styles different styles um for Barack Obama I think he uses simple words but they were woven in such a way that it turned out beautiful and with his delivery it turned out something very uplifting to listen to if you listen to his speech Audacity Of Hope or his victory speech in 8 and so many others um along the way most of the time he would touch on American values such as um how America is a land of opportunities America is a land of ideals a Land of Hope and dream and how he himself belongs to American Dream because he became precedents right so it's his personal story and the story of American values that go together so he was such an eloquent speaker I mean with the same speech if you have other people delivering the speech the modern tone will be different yeah yeah so it's not just about his content he also adds personal story and the way he delivers it yeah the content is 1 thing but the personality of the person delivering it is also another important components true and what about the Seda Arden um she is of a different style I guess she is more of a sympathetic empathetic emotional type of um Communicator like in her farewell address she was talking about how no matter who you are or how you are you can become a leader as well so she said you can lead like me and she almost cried saying it so she became emotional and I think it showed um how much she actually believed in what she said very human very relatable yeah exactly you know it's emotional you can feel how she's feeling mm and what about legal and you your 1 of your favorites for sure my favorites if you look at his um speeches in his younger years you know for election rallies or interviews he was so feisty um so strong so determined I'll give you examples um in 1980 the pilots of Singapore Airline they they had a strike and he resolved so during an election rally he talked about it and then he said anyone who Wants to Rule Singapore must have the iron in him this is not a house of cards this is about your life and mine I spent my whole lifetime building meaning Singapore as long as I'm in charge nobody is going to knock it down strong words right right clear message but I really want you to Google and look at his non-verbal Communications as well his emotions it was so intense it was so strong and his message was crystal clear she wouldn't give in an inch not even 1 single millimeter mhm so that's the type of person she is yeah very Frank very direct but sometimes he can be funny as well yeah because he wants it even from my sick bed or if you are lowering me into the grave and I see that something is not right I'll get up right yeah yeah yeah so everything is showed how witty he is intelligent of course you know we all know his intelligent but he's very witty and sometimes his humorous as well yeah so looking back at Thailand right now we're about to have a new leader what kind of leader with what kind of communication skill do you think the new leader has to have I think for any leader at all um there must be able to communicate because a lot of time people would say the leader forms his job well but he might not be communicating that well okay but I think communication is an indispensable quality of a good leader so I think for the most basic criteria for any leader is to tell us clearly what you think be able to express your ideas be able to articulate what you're thinking so that we understand whether or not we agree with your policies is another issue but we are here talking about Communications so I think clear Communications is very crucial and I think that's the most um basic requirements that any leader um should have mm to become great leaders great communicators then I think that's another level I think great leaders a great communicators would be able to calm the public down in times of crisis a great leader would be able to unite the country in times of tragedies I think great leaders would be able to soothe the public in times of loss and mourning and great leaders would be able to motivate the public in times of challenges so I think that's another level of Communications because if we
